Converting RAW to WebP: A Complete Guide for Photographers

RAW files are unprocessed sensor data — 20 to 100 MB each and unviewable without specialist software. Converting to WebP develops them into finished, publishable images.

What a RAW conversion actually does

A RAW file is a grid of sensor readings with no white balance, tone curve, colour profile or sharpening applied. Converting means demosaicing the sensor pattern, applying a white balance and tone mapping, and then encoding. The developer's choices matter as much as the encoder's.

White balance is the setting that matters

Because nothing is baked in, white balance changes the result more than any other option. Camera-as-shot is the sensible default; daylight, cloudy, shade, tungsten and fluorescent presets are there for when the camera guessed wrong or you are matching a set.

Keep the RAW files

This cannot be overstated. The RAW is the master with full highlight and shadow recovery latitude. A WebP export is an 8-bit, lossy, display-referred derivative — useful, but not something you can meaningfully re-grade later.
