About WebP to TIFF conversion
Print bureaus, magazine prepress, photo labs and digital-archive programmes specify TIFF because it is lossless, carries ICC colour and opens in every professional tool. A .webp gets you turned away at the door of all of them. WebP is a delivery format, not a working format. Browsers render it everywhere, but the moment a .webp leaves the browser it hits software that never caught up — Photoshop only added WebP support in version 23.2, Office before 2021 will not place one, Outlook will not render one inline, and a long tail of upload forms validate against a hard-coded list that has never heard of it.
TIFF — Tagged Image File Format — is lossless lzw or zip, or entirely uncompressed with full alpha, plus arbitrary extra channels and support described as: universal in professional software; poor in browsers. Where WebP is optimised for the last hop to a browser, TIFF is what the software on the other side of that hop is expecting. Converting is a one-step fix for the "this file type is not supported" wall.
Size is the trade-off worth knowing about: TIFF files are 10-50x larger than WebP. Converting WebP to TIFF cannot invent quality: it produces a lossless container around already-lossy pixels, and it cannot restore the 16-bit depth or CMYK separation a true prepress TIFF would carry.
Where TIFF comes from
Aldus published TIFF in 1986 as a common output format for the desktop scanners then arriving on the market. Its tag-based structure made it endlessly extensible, and that flexibility is why it became — and remains — the standard for print prepress, archival scanning and scientific imaging. TIFF holds 16-bit channels, CMYK separations, ICC profiles and multiple pages, none of which WebP attempts.

When to convert WebP to TIFF
TIFF is what print production and archival workflows ask for. Commercial printers, magazine prepress, photo labs and digitisation programmes specify it because it is lossless, carries ICC colour profiles and 16-bit channels, and opens in every professional tool. A .webp gets turned away at the door of all of them.
Archivists and digitisation projects use TIFF as the stable, standards-based master that can be re-processed, cropped and colour-corrected indefinitely without accumulating the generational loss repeated lossy saves cause. Converting a WebP into TIFF gives you a file those pipelines will accept and preserve going forward.
Be honest with yourself about what this can and cannot do. A lossless container around already-lossy pixels does not recover anything the WebP encoder discarded, and it cannot invent the 16-bit depth or CMYK separation a true prepress TIFF would carry. Expect the file to grow by 10–50x for the privilege.
WebP to TIFF tips
- If the goal is simply "make this open in my software", TIFF is usually the right call — but check whether the destination accepts PNG or JPG first, since those are accepted even more widely.
- Convert from the highest-quality WebP you have. Each lossy re-encode costs a little detail, and starting from an already-compressed copy compounds it.
- Strip metadata before sharing. Images saved from the web can carry the original photographer's EXIF, including camera serial and, occasionally, GPS coordinates.
- Batch the job rather than converting one at a time — the queue runs conversions in parallel and returns a single zip.
- Keep the .webp original if the image is also going back onto a web page. Serving the TIFF version instead will cost you page weight.
